The early signs families miss for years.

The signs are rarely dramatic. That is the first thing to understand, and the thing that costs families years. early signs of alcohol dependence

You expect the slurred speech, the missed work, the scene at a cousin's wedding. Those arrive later, if they arrive at all. What comes first is administrative. A morning that needs rescheduling. A second, softer account of how much was at the party. A bottle in the recycling nobody mentions, then a week on, another.

You normalise these one at a time. That is not a lapse in attention; it is how attention works. A single odd evening is not a pattern. It is a Tuesday. The pattern only shows itself in aggregate, and by the time the aggregate is undeniable, you have been living inside it long enough to have built a household around it.

The markers are quiet. early signs of alcohol dependence

The accounting goes first. "I had two." The arithmetic stops resolving: the bottles, the money, the hour he came up to bed. You find yourself doing sums you never used to do, and not saying what they add up to.

Then the mornings get later. The nine o'clock start that becomes half past ten. The Sunday that no longer really begins. Nothing you could point to. Just a day with less in it than the day used to hold.

The drinking moves, too. From the dining table to the kitchen counter to the car in the basement parking, wherever it is least watched. People rarely hide what they think is fine.

And the defence arrives before the accusation. He tells you he hardly drank, and you hadn't asked. You learn to register that as information.

The hardest marker to read is the one that looks like strength. He drinks an amount that would put you flat, and seems unbothered. The family files this under "he handles it well." It is the opposite of reassurance. A body that can take that much has been practising.

Why it takes so long to see.

Love edits. You explain each instance with the kindest available story, because the unkind story is unbearable and you are not ready to be the person who thinks it. The work anniversary explains the Friday. The pressure at the office explains the week. Each explanation is reasonable on its own. Strung together over two years, they are a wall.

Functioning is the best cover dependence has. The person paying the school fees on time, showing up to the in-laws, closing the deal: that person does not match the picture in your head, and so you let the picture win. High-functioning does not mean fine. It means the cost is being paid somewhere you cannot yet see: in sleep, in mood, in the version of him that used to be in the room and now mostly isn't.

When you finally see it.

Noticing late is not the same as failing. The household ran on those generous stories because the stories kept it standing. There is no version of you that should have known sooner; there is only the version of you that knows now.

What changes at this point is small and not small. The drinking stops being weather, something that happens to the house, and becomes a thing with a name, which means a thing you can stand in front of. You do not have to have the conversation today. You do not have to be certain. You only have to stop explaining it away, because the explanations were never for him. They were for you, and you no longer need them.
